Further Information / Detailed Tour Description
First Day : Our private 5 days tour starts with driving via the coastal highway towards Peloponnese. While on route you will see the area of the Saronic Gulf where the famous Naval Battle of Salamis took place in 480 B.C. between the Greeks & the Persians. Our first stop/visit is to the famous Corinth Canal which, through Isthmus, connects the Corinthian Gulf (Ionian Sea) with the Saronic Gulf (Aegean Sea) and cuts Peloponnese peninsula from the rest Greek mainland. We continue our private tour with our first sight which is the Ancient Corinthos. Exploring the archaeological area, you will meet the Temple of Apollo (built on a rocky hill), the Theatre, the Roman Odeon, the Glauke fountain into a natural rock & the Archaeological Museum. Besides them there is the famous "Vema" (tribunal) from which St. Paul preached to the Corinthians.
Our next visit is at the famous Mycenae (the Kingdom of King Agamemnon). Amongst others, you will admire the Lions’ Gate, the Cyclopean Walls, the Treasure of Atreus (Agamemnon Grave), the Subterranean Cistern & the Archaeological Museum. We then drive to our last site of the first tour day, to Nafplio, an old & romantic seaport town which was the first capital of Greece after the Greek Revolution in 1821 until 1834. You will be lost in the picturesque streets of the old town admiring old classical governmental buildings, especially in the Constitution Square. You will enjoy a traditional Greek dinner while attending the famous Bourtzi castle located in the middle of the harbor of Nafplio. Then you will spend your night in a charm hotel in the area.
Second Day : In the morning and after having your breakfast, we shall drive to the Ancient Epidaurus. You will explore the archaeological area of the Sanctuary of Asklepios, with the famous - for its acoustic - Ancient Theatre and you will visit the archaeological museum. We continue driving along the coastal road towards south Peloponnese. We will pass via coastal places of wild nature while admiring the blue scene of the Argolic Gulf. We finally reach one of the major attraction in Peloponnese, the Byzantine fortress town of Monemvasia (its name derives from the combination of two Greek words and means the only entrance). Monemvasia is a perfectly preserved medieval settlement (connected with the main land via a bridge), with a unique magical atmosphere & still inhabited. While crossing the entrance of the old town you will start a historic journey back through the ages. Castles, walls, old mansions, narrow cobbled lanes, churches, low arches & vaults, coats of arms, imperial thrones, Byzantine icons are some of the unique beauties that you will admire. You will cross the central narrow cobbled street framed by shops which leads you to the main square. Amongst others you will visit the church of Elkomenos Christos (town cathedral) & the Monemvasia Archaeological Collection which is housing in an 16th century former mosque. You will enjoy a marvelous traditional greek lunch in one of the charm tavernas.
You will then visit the Upper town & you will have the opportunity to visit the old church of St. Sophia, built on the edge of the rock. From there you will admire the panoramic view of the Lower town & the open sea picture. In the afternoon we leave the ancient world of Monemvasia & our second day ends with our arrival to the city of Sparti, the capital of Lakonia & birthplace of the King of Spartans Leonidas, where you will spend your night in a charm hotel.
Third Day : In the morning and after having your breakfast you will have the opportunity to visit the Sparta sights, such as the Statue of the King Leonidas, the Temple of Artemis, the Archaeological museum and the Olive museum. Our last visit of the day will be to the famous Byzantine Mystras (UNESCO protected site) which is located in a physical fortified hill. You will explore the medieval castle, the fortified settlement with palaces, many churches & monasteries and finally you will visit the local museum. Time for dinner in the city of Sparti and you will spend your night in a charm hotel in the area.
Fourth Day : In the morning and after having your breakfast we shall proceed with the visit to Diros Caves. You will explore the unique caves by small boats & through narrow passage ways. You will admire some of the most beautiful formations of stalagmites & stalaktites. Leaving back south Peloponnese & driving towards northwest via Messinia we arrive in the world–famous city of Ancient Olympia, the birthplace of the Olympic Games. Time for dinner and you will spend your night in a charm hotel in the area.
Fifth Day : In the morning and after having your breakfast you will visit the unique archaeological sight of Ancient Olympia, where the first Olympic Games took place on 776 B.C. Amongst decades of monuments, you will admire the Temple of Zeus, the Temple of Hera, the Philipeion, the Palestra, the Ancient Stadium, the Ancient Gymnasium, the Prytaneion, the Bouleuterion & the Leonidaion. Your knowledge will be complemented with the visit of the archaeological museum, one of the most important museums in Greece, with permanent exhibition of findings from the excavations, dating since prehistoric times. Time for having lunch and our private 5 days adventure reaches to the end with our returning back to starting point in Athens.
