Eleusis Museum Marble Sarkophagus

Description

Our private tour starts with driving towards west side of Attica prefecture to the city of Eleusis. In accordance to the Greek mythology, Eleusis was known in ancient times as one of the five holy cities with the famous Eleusinians Mysteries, where the Goddess Demeter (Goddess of harvest & agriculture) and the Persephone (also called Kore, daughter of Zeus & Demeter, Queen of the underworld) were honored. The name of the city became wider thank to the great ancient tragedian Aeschylous, whom birthplace was Eleusis.

In the archaeological site of Eleusis you will see the Roman Court with the Temple of Propylaea Artemis, the Demeter’s Sanctuary with the Kallichoro Frear, the Ploytonio and the Telestirio the main Temple of Demeter. Above the Telestirio, in the hill, there is an old small church of Panagia dedicated to the Virgin Mary. It dates back to post-Byzantine times.

You will next visit the Archaeological museum of Eleusis with a collection of exhibits like the Marble Sarcophagus, the Protoattic Amphora, the Fleeing Kore, the headless statue of Goddess Demeter and the statue of cistophorus Kore.

Our private tour concludes with the return in our starting place. Contact us for further details and info.

Important Note: The archaeological museum of Eleusis is temporarily closed since Jan. 1st, 2020 due to renovation.
